Paris based Willie Cortez has been on Bloggertronix’s radar for quite a while, firstly with his project Seppuku Paradigm created with his brother Alex, and then later with his work on horror movie soundtracks ‘Martyrs’ and ‘Red Nights’.

Over the past year Cortez has been working on and releasing new material, including a killer video for the new track ‘Note to Self‘, which is available as a limited edition 7″ single.

This mini ep release is home to 4 tracks that are as raw and real as they come. Recorded in a garden at night time, during a stint in the south of France this summer. Rough around the edges, totally off the cuff and lo-fi, these tunes are lovely…and quite a change from the super produced tracks of his past releases.

Of particular note are the tracks ‘Unfinished’ and ‘About time’. ‘Unfinished’ has a great southern Americana, plod along vibe and sports some deadly vocals that mirror that of Yoni Wolf of Cali based ‘Why?’….great stuff!

‘About time’ features a soft vocal bed that is slowly built upon to hit a roaring solid wall of guitar sound…a throw back to those horror movie soundtracks Cortez released a few years ago.

It’s been a couple of years since we wrote about Open Mike Eagle and his ‘Rent party extension’ EP, so it was pretty exciting to hear this new release and re-discover his brand of smart, fully aware rap.

The six track release is home to some really tight joints, Mikes flow is brilliant as per usual and there is some sweet sampling afoot, particularly the third track ‘Raps For When It’s Just You And The Abyss’ which features the chorus of a ‘Broken Social Scene’ tune.

 

 

The final sign off track entitled ‘Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Rap)’ was produced by Gold Panda and features his signature glitchy beats and token excitable energy…very cool.

Unfortunately we slept on his full length record ‘Dark Comedy’ released last year (Yeah…I was a new Mama and blogging didn’t happen so much!) but you can check out that wicked release, home to more of the same conscious greatness as the new EP over – HERE!

HOPEN (A.K.A Haiir, the second half of duo Starting Teeth and more commonly Childe Grangier) recently dropped this truly weird and wonderful record late last week on Bern based imprint ‘Everest Records’. 

It features a collection of ten pieces that swing the gamut from hypnotic synth drone tracks, like that of  ‘Paloma Black Ordax‘, to tracks riddled with dance elements like’Cruising‘. At times there are pieces that are almost cinematic in scope for example the haunting opening track ‘Danse de la réalite de Dakar‘ and the Twin peaksesq ‘Diamonds and Meat‘.

This is a dark and deep record no doubt, but there is a steady silver lining that runs throughout its core. It’s a brighter and more consistent release then past HOPEN records, home to some really solid and exciting sound stories… 

Here’s what the artist had to say about the release himself – “The album is about Montreal and Wakefield, Quebec, it’s about feeling blood circulating again in my veins. About Toronto, Port Louis, Bon Bassin, Africa and Phoenix beers, exploring Highways and roads. I have been a fan and friend of DJ D-mass for over a decade…I was super excited to hear he was finally dropping his debut full length and even more pumped when I heard how brilliant it is.

Originally from Bermuda, D-mass has been living in Canada for many a year now. He is a DJ (half of the Production duo The 3%), Producer and remixer. An off-kilter sample master in the vein of DJ Food, DJ Shadow, Kid Koala and many other of the fine folks over at Ninja Tune or Equinox records…his skill is at that level and now it’s time for a little recognition.

The 12 instrumental tracks, on the release sport samples, beats, and some prime scratching. The record was originally started in 2000 but was finally completed in 2006. Back then D-Mass didn’t feel like it was quite the right time to release the record there was an overload of this style of genre-melding sample work in the charts and the scene was over saturated….but more recently he’s noticed a bunch of old skool DJ’s making a return to the music biz with fresh energy and ideas. Now is the time for ‘The Graduate’ see the light of day, and about time too…really, it’s a pretty cool release.

The album features down-tempo, smooth grooves, lots of experimentation with voices (check the track Vocabulist) and beats to keep you locked in, plus nice clean production. Of note are some choice sweet and yet simplistic vocals on the first track by guest vocalist, indie roots singer Andrea Simms-Karp, who is also based in Ottawa.
