RONLEY TEPER’S LIPLINERS – ‘LUCKY AND FINNEGAN’

This epic and gloriously detailed video, is the last in a trilogy created by Toronto’s wildly creative Ronley Teper, and Montreal based mixed media artist Davide Di Saro.

The video was hand drawn and really is beautiful, full of color and life. It is in the vein of the 70’s video for ‘Love is all‘ by Roger Glover, or that of Paul McCartney for the video of ‘We all Stand Together‘. Whereas the music has more of a Tom Waits vibe (think Swordfishtrombones), such a great mix of sounds and ideas!

DERADOORIAN – ‘YOUR CREATOR’

Deradoorian (Angel Deradoorian) is an artist who was formally bassist and vocalist in the band Dirty Projectors. She has collaborated in the past with Matmos, The Roots and Flying Lotus to name a few, but released her solo EP entitled ‘Mind Raft’ in 2009.

The above video is for the song ‘The Creator’ taken from her debut full length, ‘The Expanding Flower Planet’, a really beautiful record which was released on Anticon Records this past fall.

This super hypnotic, bright and yet somewhat calming video, was created in remote collaboration between artist Olivia Wyatt and Angel Deradoorian from across the States.

CHASSOL – ‘LA ROUTE DE LA TRACE’ (PIEUVRE REMIX)

Chassol is one of the most understated pianist/musicians coming out of Paris at the moment. A real innovator when it comes to experimentation in classical and world music, he often uses samples from video footage, as a base from which to create a track. I saw him at a music event here in Geneva, talking about his creative process, and found it fascinating. This video by TricateVision is  a great introduction to the artist and what makes him tick –

 

Pieuvre remixed ‘La route de la trace’ from the album Big Sun, and Chassol made the above video with unreleased images from the ‘Carnival of Fort de France’ in the West-Indies.

THE FRANK AND WALTERS – ‘WE ARE THE YOUNG MEN’

 

The Frank and Walters are a band from Cork, Ireland that have been creating and releasing brilliant, fun, smart music for the last two decades or so. I got to see them just under 10 years ago and had such a great time…they have a bit of a cult following back in Cork (where the show was) and it was really exhilarating to see how much their fans love and support them…singing along to every song, the energy was killer.

The above video is for the song ‘We are the young Men’, taken from the bands latest album “Songs for the Walking Wounded” which dropped this past fall. If you enjoyed this rock-out track you should buy the record which is also home to the song ‘Stages’ a down to earth tune about finding a peace and balance within yourself and others…forgiving to move on, to look at things through the eyes of another is really important sometimes. Stages features fellow Cork man Cillian Murphy, reading the spoken word part at the end…lovely voice, nice touch.

JEL – ‘STEADY’ (FROM THE LP ‘LATE PASS’)

Anticon co-founder Jel dropped his third album ‘late Pass’ this spring..the single ‘Steady’ is the first from the release. Of the album the artist says –

“Sometimes the inspirations came from walking around outside, sometimes they would come from a Boots Riley song,” Jel said. “We’re an easily seduced culture in a twisted tornado of cell phones and information overload. As a response, I kept things a little more minimal. I didn’t want to over do the drums. I wanted to get my point across.”

HUMAN DON’T BE ANGRY – ‘1985’ (FROM DEBUT S/T ALBUM)

Malcolm Middleton’s new project after ‘Arab Strap’ is decidedly more up beat than his previous band, but you can still hear A.S’s signature guitar riffs. ‘Human Don’t Be Angry’s self titled debut record, was released earlier this summer and the above video was for the first single ‘1985’.

ALGIERS – ‘BLOOD’ (FROM THE LP ‘

Raging guitars, soulful vocals, deep dark stuff! The above video is for the 7″ single release ‘Blood’ dropped by Atlanta, Georgia native musician’s Algiers. The band dropped their debut self titled album on Matador Records earlier this year…and currently split their time between New York & London.

THE HIGHEST ORDER – ‘STARE DOWN THE BARREL OF TODAY’ (SINGLE)’

‘The Highest Order’ is another project of Toronto’s Simone Schmidt whom we wrote about in 2009 with her band ‘One Hundred Dollars’ and a few years later with the solo project ‘Fiver’. This woman has some fierce pipes! A truly mesmerizing voice that features prominently with ‘The Highest Order’, along side some gloriously twangy guitar playing.

The above video was directed by Simone too…using footage from over 10 years of mini DV camera recording…what a trip! In regards to the lyrics Schmidt says – “Lyrically, it’s definitely about feeling ruled by ambivalence – the state of feeling conflicting feelings simultaneously,”

MAJICAL CLOUDZ – ‘SILVER CAR CRASH’

Montreal’s Devon Welsh is the founder of Majical Cloudz. He produces and preforms his personal, minimalist electronic music with the help of Matthew Otto. The duo also produced and directed the above video for the single ‘Silver Car Crash’, a track taken from their upcoming sophomore, which drops on October 16th.

Paris based Willie Cortez has been on Bloggertronix’s radar for quite a while, firstly with his project Seppuku Paradigm created with his brother Alex, and then later with his work on horror movie soundtracks ‘Martyrs’ and ‘Red Nights’.

Over the past year Cortez has been working on and releasing new material, including a killer video for the new track ‘Note to Self‘, which is available as a limited edition 7″ single.

This mini ep release is home to 4 tracks that are as raw and real as they come. Recorded in a garden at night time, during a stint in the south of France this summer. Rough around the edges, totally off the cuff and lo-fi, these tunes are lovely…and quite a change from the super produced tracks of his past releases.

Of particular note are the tracks ‘Unfinished’ and ‘About time’. ‘Unfinished’ has a great southern Americana, plod along vibe and sports some deadly vocals that mirror that of Yoni Wolf of Cali based ‘Why?’….great stuff!

‘About time’ features a soft vocal bed that is slowly built upon to hit a roaring solid wall of guitar sound…a throw back to those horror movie soundtracks Cortez released a few years ago.

It’s been a couple of years since we wrote about Open Mike Eagle and his ‘Rent party extension’ EP, so it was pretty exciting to hear this new release and re-discover his brand of smart, fully aware rap.

The six track release is home to some really tight joints, Mikes flow is brilliant as per usual and there is some sweet sampling afoot, particularly the third track ‘Raps For When It’s Just You And The Abyss’ which features the chorus of a ‘Broken Social Scene’ tune.

 

 

The final sign off track entitled ‘Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Rap)’ was produced by Gold Panda and features his signature glitchy beats and token excitable energy…very cool.

RAYMOND RAPOSA IS BACK WITH MORE HYBRID ELECTRONIC FOLK – ‘DECIMATION BLUES’ LP

Okay, so this album dropped a few months ago, and I should have mentioned it earlier but yeah…life, babies and such happened, and as you may have noticed blog updates have been few and far between….I’m trying to change that though.

So yes, Castanets’ ‘Decimation Blues’ dropped on ‘Asthmatic Kitty Records‘ in mid-August, and I’ve had it on heavy rotation since so I ought to write about it over here quick sharp right?!

What a deadly release! Front man Raymond Raposa has reinvented the Castanets sound once again with this his 6th release. The bands musical style has developed, evolved into something quite unique…a future sound, a space western soundtrack from the future…really experimental and brighter, much lighter then previous ‘Castanets’ releases.

Despite the ominous sounding title there is hope and light in this 12 track record. The album features broad soundscapes, drum machine beats and synth sounds hanging out with haunting analog elements. It is home to everyday life stories, tales of times gone by, with some familiar characters thrown in for good measure. Stories told in the most poignant way, lyrics delivered via Raposa’s signature rusty-croak vocals…Wonderful stuff!

It’s been a few years since TV On The Radio released a record, and from what I can gather by listening to their recently released singles, it’s been time well spent.

The lads are back and in fine form. The new tracks are brilliant, rock-out tightness in full effect. The upbeat racer ‘Happy Idiot’ and reverb drenched, synth joint ‘Careful You’, make me super excited to get this album in my grubby little mitts!
