REUBEN BUTCHART & THE MILLWORKERS – NAMELESS AND AWAKE

EIGHT POEMS BY JOHN WILLIAM CARROLL, SET TO MUSIC BY

NEW YORK’S REUBEN BUTCHART

I USED TO PLAY REUBEN ON MY RADIO SHOW BACK IN THE DAY, I ENJOY HIS UNIQUE VOICE AND IMPECCABLE RANGE. HIS REFRESHING BRAND OF JAZZY FLECKED CHAMBER-POP IS SHOWCASED WONDERFULLY ON HIS NEW RELEASE ‘NAMELESS AND AWAKE’ WHICH I RECEIVED A FEW MONTHS AGO –

THIS IS BUTCHART’S THIRD ALBUM, AND WAS CREATED BY THE COMPOSER, SINGER & SONGWRITER HIMSELF, WITH THE HELP OF 8 OTHER MUSICIANS DURING THEIR RESIDENCY AT THE ROBERT WILSON’S WATERMILL CENTRE, JUST OUTSIDE LONG ISLAND, NY.

THE BEAUTIFULLY WHIMSICAL AND IMAGE EVOKING WORDS, SUNG BY BUTCHART FOR ALL EIGHT SONGS, ARE INFACT POEMS WRITTEN BY AMERICAN POET, JOHN WILLIAM CARROLL.

BUTCHART ALSO DESIGNED AND ILLUSTRATED A BOOK WHICH IS HOME TO SOME LOVELY DRAWINGS, COUPLED WITH THE WORDS OF THE POEMS FOR EACH TRACK.

FOR MANY YEARS BUTCHART HAS PLAYED SOLO IN NEW YORK, BUT HE ALSO SPENT TIME PLAYING PIANO WITH ‘ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS‘. HE HAS ALSO COMPOSED MUSIC FOR DANCE AND FILM.

ABOUT HIS STYLE OF SOULFUL, ORCHESTRAL-POP, SHARA WORDEN OF MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND SAID IT – “…dances with classical and jazz styles in one sweeping gesture, at once earthly and ephemeral.”
